The story of a family living with lots of love and a little autism!

Ok…….so I know the title of this post is lame.

But hey- it’s Sunday night and I’m too tired to come up with something wittier , so you’ll just have to roll with it!

I have written in previous blogs that Harley’s new special interest subject is “aircraft” and in particular “Stealth Bombers” ( or as he corrects me:  Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit Bomber !)

This new interest had led to some cute and funny episodes.

Like for example:  A couple of nights ago, I made rissoles for dinner.

I thought they turned out great and served them artistically on a plate with some creamy mashed potato and dollops of tomato sauce. I was really quite proud of them!
All of us gobbled them up but Harley threw himself on the floor screaming: “I’m not eating them – I don’t want to blow up!”.
We all looked at each other puzzled and I scolded him : “Don’t be so ridiculous, just eat them and stop being a pain. Everyone else is eating them”.

Yet, the meltdown continued……….

Eventually, after he’d calmed down to a point where we could talk to him, he carefully explained (in very confusing and disjointed speech) that he wasn’t going to eat them because they are bombs and you drop them on the enemy NOT eat them!

Then the penny dropped!………….He thought they were MISSILES.

He didn’t know that these harmless meat patties were called “rissoles”.

After I’d explained that they were really just large meatballs, he sighed with relief and he happily ate them all up and that was the end of it!

I think this son of mine has been researching stealth bombers a little too much!!

This afternoon, Mum left after her 10 day visit. It was wonderful having her giving me a break but still sad to see her go.
We took her to the airport so she could fly home again.

Because Lucas had never been to an airport in his entire life and Harley had only been once or twice when he was about 2 or 3 to drop people off (so he wouldn’t remember it anyway) and bearing in mind Harley’s new topic of interest, we decided to pay the ludicrous parking fees that we normally avoid by dropping mum off and actually went in to the terminal and spent an hour or so having coffee with her instead.

Neither of the the boys have ever been on an aeroplane (of any aircraft really) so they have only ever seen them in books or flying high in the sky on the odd occasion and WHAT a treat it was for them!

They had their faces literally glued to the huge glass windows watching aeroplanes taxi, load passengers and take-off almost the entire time.

THEY.WERE.IN.HEAVEN!

Every few minutes or so, Harley would run over and give a monologue about what he had seen with an excited face and a spring in his step. Lucas would also come and babble excitedly to us  and the words “plane”, “big” and “awesome” were used a lot!

So, I think we found a really great way to have a cup of coffee in peace. Just sit near the massive windows at the airport and let the scenery entertain them for us!
We gave Harley the airport and aeroplane Lego for his birthday and as you can see from this photo – he adores it.  He leaves  it right beside his bed at night.

And I gotta say : I MUCH prefer this obsession special interest to his previous “superhero” one :)

  1. You can feel their excitement in the photos! So gorgeous.

I’m sorry you had to say goodbye to your Mum today. But so glad the plane interest could be explored in a whole new way!
    :)

  2. That is a very cool lego plane :)
Airports are fascinating places, I am so glad everyone had such a great experience. I am impressed how much H knows about planes. He would love to chat to my Husbeend, as he knows EVERYTHING about aircraft, military machinery (anything that moves, really) and weapons. His father was in the armed forces and it seems Husbeend decided to learn all about it. What is a relief to me is that he does not share this incredible wealth of knowledge unless it is required. (This does include the use of images on news stories, and he always knows when they get it wrong… :) ) Husbeend is the guy to have at ANY quiz night (he knows pretty much everything!) I am betting H will be similar when he is older!

On the theme of obsessions, Perky has recently fallen in love with Astro Boy. At least it is age-appropriate. That theme song gets in my head, though. (can you hear my internal ‘aaaargh’!?)

    • hahaha, Thanks for the possible insight into what I can expect for Harley’s future! lol

i LOVE Astro boy! HARLEY has a key-ring of astro that is a torch with his legs being the light source! It’s SO cool!

  3. That is soooo cute!!

I think I like this special intrest better too :)
